Home Improvement - Fix Your Attic Stairs

home-improvement-1-300x200.jpgWhen you think of home improvement, you think of major renovations. You think of a room that needs to be completely redone. The kitchen, bathroom, living room, and the master bedroom. These rooms are always the ones that get the attention. But, what about your basement? What about your garage? What about the attic? What about your attic stairs? What about your basement stairs? What about your attic stairs, too? If you've ever had to climb those stairs in the middle of the night because you couldn't sleep, or you just didn't want to go back upstairs, then you know what I'm talking about. And if you haven't, then you need to! You can save yourself a lot of money by doing some home remodeling projects yourself. In fact, it's the only way to do them. If you hire a remodeling contractor, you're going to spend more than you would if you did it yourself. But, if you don't have the time or the skills, you should do some home improvement projects yourself. One of the best things you can do is to fix your attic stairs. If you don't, you'll probably end up with an attic that you can't use. And, that will cost you money. Not only will you have to pay for the materials and labor to build an addition, but you'll also have to pay for the time you lose from not being able to use your attic.

Fixing attic stairs is not hard to do. Just follow these simple steps:

1) First, measure your existing stairway. Take the measurements down to the last step, and add one inch for every additional step. So, if you have five steps, you need to measure out six inches for each step. 2) Next, cut the wood pieces that you'll need. You'll need a 4x4 piece for the top of the stairs, and two 2x6 pieces for the sides. Then, cut the 2x6 pieces to the length of the top piece. 3) Place the 2x6 pieces onto the 4x4 piece, and attach them with screws. 4) Place the bottom piece onto the top piece, and attach it with screws. 5) Now, you need to make the new steps. To do this, you'll need to cut the 2x6 pieces down to the height of the top piece. Then, attach the 2x6 pieces to form the steps. 6) Finally, attach the treads. Attach the treads to the top and bottom pieces. Now, you have a beautiful, functional staircase that you can use every day. For more complex projects, contact a professional remodeler.
